“Organized by Leisha Dehart-Davis, a group of women PA scholars ordered pizza one evening at the University of Minnesota Public Management Research Association conference in 2015 and sat in a back classroom in the Humphrey School discussing their desire for a greater role for women in academic public administration. AWPA was founded! Those founding mothers were: Leisha DeHart-Davis, Mary Feeney, Cam Stivers, Rosemary O’Leary, Amy Smith, Kelly LeRoux, and Deneen Hatmaker. Leisha was the true organizer of, and catalyst for, the founding of the organization and even built the first website and listserv.
A year later Dean Sandra Archibald and Rachel Fyall at the Evans School at the University of Washington hosted the first ever AWPA gathering as a pre-conference workshop prior to the 2016 conference of the American Society for Public Administration. Today we are 400+ members strong and the rest is history.”
